children's yoga camp

  • Iyengar Yoga Center of Grand Rapids 327 Division Avenue South Grand Rapids, MI, 49503 United States (map)

Children's Yoga Camp Dates: August 22-26th

For children ages 7 & up, tweens & teens welcome! All yoga experience levels welcome!

Yoga is very beneficial for children's overall health and development. While the emphasis is upon mobility and agility for the younger ages, gradually the postures are improved and perfected.   Join us for a daily quickly-paced playful class of yoga asanas (postures), yoga story time about sages, postures, and ethical precepts of yoga (yama and niyama) that will enrich children's understanding and experience of the background of yoga followed by an art and writing activities that will reinforce learning of the sanskrit (the language of classical yoga, which is taught and practiced in the yoga asana class) and english translations of the classical yoga posture names and elements of the names.  The class will close with some restorative yoga postures and a chant in Sanskrit to come full circle.  We will also learn and practice poses that are soothing for stomachaches, headaches, and much more! Stress reduction is learned through practicing relaxation and poses that help strengthen and tone the nervous system.  Other poses help with balancing the glandular systems for optimal development.  Practicing yoga postures helps improve posture, promote healthy development, balanced mind and emotions, and cultivate a positive outlook.

Daily Schedule Plan:
2:00 - 2:45 pm     yoga asana class
2:45 - 3:15pm       break, snack & clean up
3:15 - 3:30 pm      Story time: stories about the yoga postures, yoga sages, and ethical behaviors (yama and niyama)
3:30 - 3:50pm      Art/Writing Activity   There will be two activities to choose from each day.  Both activities will reinforce understanding the names of poses and connecting them to the meaning.  Some basic yoga philosophy may be introduced: such as learning the names of the yamas/niyamas (ethical behaviors such as non-violence, honesty, non-acquisitiveness..., especially as related to the story that we read that day.)
3:50 - 4:00pm    Closing short restorative yoga practice and closing chant.
